Australia’s post-genre music and arts series Dots+Loops are thrilled to invite emerging artists to submit applications for their Performance and Composition Fellowship Programs.
Dots+Loops annual Fellowship Programs are a unique opportunity for emerging artists of all genres and disciplines looking to adventure beyond the traditional. Centred around the Dots+Loops Fellowship Residency, held in Brisbane each December in the week leading up to Dots+Loops Nonstop, their annual festival, the Fellowship Program combines bespoke mentoring, workshops and seminars, collaboration opportunities, and networking and professional development with artistic and industry mentors, culminating in performances alongside their mentors at Nonstop.
Now in its fourth year, the Performance Fellowship is a week-long residency program for four emerging performers. Working directly alongside their mentors, Fellows create two new sets of live music to be premiered at Nonstop, developed together through various workshops and exercises, challenging Fellows to work collaboratively and explore new approaches to music making.
The 2021 Performance Fellowship runs from 8 to 12 December 2021, with performances in Dots+Loops Nonstop on 12 December, and the 2021 Mentors are Madeleine Cocolas and Expo 88 (aka Luke Cuerel). The program is open to performers of any instrument (acoustic or electric) of any genre or musical background – music notation literacy and/or formal musical training are not essential.
The Composition Fellowship seeks to support composers interested in taking their music beyond the traditions of the classical concert hall, developing skills in collaborative music making, integrating music technologies in composition, and creating engaging post-genre art.
Each year one emerging Australian composer is selected for the Fellowship, receiving mentorship over 12-months from some of Australia’s leading composers, and commissioned to write a new work to be premiered at Dots+Loops Nonstop.
Applications are now open for the 2021-22 Composition Fellowship, led by mentors Vanessa Tomlinson, Sally Whitwell, Chris Perren and Connor D’Netto. The 2021-22 Fellow will receive mentorship from November 2021 to November 2022, participate in the Fellowship Residency in Brisbane from 7 to 11 December 2022, and have their new commission premiered at Dots+Loops Nonstop on 11 December 2022.
In 2020, Dots+Loops launched the Composition Fellowship Program, selecting Melbourne-based artist Oliver Brown as the inaugural Fellow. Mentored by Madeleine Cocolas, Eve Klein and Connor D’Netto, Oliver has been preparing for his new work to be premiered at Nonstop 2021 by Melbourne-based cellist David Moran.
“The Dots+Loops Composition Fellowship has been invaluable for my creative development both in terms of the mentorship embedded in the program and also the compositional freedom it allows,” said Oliver Brown.
“My mentors have enthusiastically encouraged me to pursue many different avenues of exploration. The Fellowship has bolstered my creative practice outside my formal studies; through being introduced to mentors and collaborators I’ve felt increasingly confident as a contributor to the extra-tertiary art-music space.”
