The Sydney Improvised Music Association has announced the expansion of its Emerging Composers Mentorship program, and is inviting applications from composers.
Due to the devastating and ongoing impacts of COVID-19 on the performing arts sector, the program will now see four composers participating in the program in 2021 and 2022. The four emerging and mid-career composers will be paired with a leading Australian jazz artist, who will mentor them to write a new work for a large jazz ensemble. This is a significant increase from previous years.
Thrilled to be able to provide further opportunities for composers, SIMA Program Director Zoe Hauptmann says: “This initiative is a fantastic opportunity for a talented upcoming composer to work closely with one of the best jazz composers in the country. That kind of collaboration and connection is invaluable.”
Sophie Min, the 2020 recipient, worked closely with ARIA award winning composer, pianist, and educator Barney McAll to compose a new work.
Sophie says: “It has been a phenomenal opportunity to work with Barney McAll, SIMA and APRA on my composition. Barney’s mentoring gave me the courage to be more adventurous with the piece and some fresh ideas to incorporate into my compositional process”.
The 2021 Emerging Composers program is valued at $20,000, which includes promotional support for the new work, professional publicity support for the performance premiere (pending health orders), and marketing support that are in addition to the paid fees to musicians and mentors.
Previous recipients include Sophie Min (Pictured), Cheryl Durongpisitkul, Harri Harding and Freyja Garbett.
