HEADLINES FROM THE INDUSTRY THIS WEEK

BY JOHN GLOVER

This week we bid farewell to a world-famous film composer, and say hello to a new ensemble led by musicians with disabilities. We also check out the Australian music in a film…that doesn’t exist?

and GO!

WORLD FIRST FOR MUSICIANS WITH DISABILITIES

The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra launches “the first symphony orchestra in the world to have a professional ensemble led by musicians with disabilities”. Six professionally trained musicians founded The Change Makers ensemble, which will perform and curate concerts across the south of England. The ensemble exists to shed light on minority groups in the arts and give those people the chance to be heard. What an excellent initiative by the BSO – Australia, take note!

WILLIAM BARTON’S MUSIC HEARD BY 110 MILLION PEOPLE

ARIA winner William Barton’s work Birdsong at Dusk (ABC Classics) was used in a trailer for Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns Home…a film that doesn’t exist. Indeed, the Tourism Australia satire ad was aired to an audience of 110 million at the Superbowl. And alongside the didgeridoo player’s music it featured a line-up of Australian actors including Chris Hemsworth, Hugh Jackman, Paul Hogan, Margo Robbie and Russell Crowe. Did the faux promo fool you, too?

GONE TOO SOON

Iconic Icelandic composer Johann Johannsson passed away on Saturday. Praised for his intricate works combining electronic and classical music orchestrations, Johann made an impact in the film world where his soundtracks for The Theory of Everything and Sicario received critical acclaim. Johann died in Berlin at the age of 48 and the cause of death has not been disclosed.

NATURAL ORDER

The brand new Ossicle Duo will this week perform its debut concert featuring an extraordinary program of contemporary music by Richard Barrett (EARTH), Brenton Broadstock (Beast from Air), Karlheinz Stockhausen (Selections from TIERKREIS), and a new work by James Hullick. The duo is made up of Benjamin Anderson on trombone, and percussionist Hamish Upton. Support their event and buy a ticket online. The event, called Natural Order, will take place at Temperance Hall in South Melbourne on February 18.
