BY JOHN GLOVER
This week, we were amazed by major achievements, excited for awesome opportunities; and, in some cases, left utterly speechless (read on and you’ll guess why)…
…and GO!
HEAVENS ABOVE!
Authorities were baffled this week after finding a 51-year-old man drunk inside a pipe organ! The perpetrator, Glenn Langford, has been accused of causing irreparable damage to the 90-year-old instrument after he flooded the Brisbane Masonic Memorial Centre. If that wasn’t enough, the man explained “things just got a little loose” after he stripped naked and crawled inside the organ itself. If you think you had a rough night, think again!
:’(
We are sad to hear that Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra Managing Director Nicholas Heyward will leave his position at the end of the year. Across his 17 years with the TSO, he has forged significant music programs and initiatives that have established the orchestra on a national scale; such as the Australian Composers Series, the TSO Foundation, and AccessTix, just to name a few. A job well done, we say!
TIME TO START PRACTISING!
The 2019 Sydney Symphony Orchestra Fellowship applications are now open! If you’re an upcoming orchestral player under 29 years of age, you have the opportunity to engage with the SSO in a year-long program of mentoring and performing. First round video auditions close in April, so we recommend you start practising those excerpts ASAP!
HSC TO ABO
Violinist and year 12 student James Armstrong has been selected to perform in the first concert season of Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. Only receiving notice to audition with ONE DAY’S NOTICE, James will perform in the ABO’s concert Thomas Tallis’ England in the City Recital Hall in Sydney over this weekend. Gee, talk about young talent!
BIG STEPS
Over in the United States, opera singer and transgender woman Lucia Lucas has been selected to perform the title role of Mozart’s Don Giovanni at Tulsa Opera. This makes the baritone singer the first ever transgender woman to perform in a principal role in the United States – WOW! If you’re over there in spring, be sure to book a ticket for what will surely be an amazing production!
