Arts news of the week (in 60 seconds)

HEADLINES FROM THE INDUSTRY THIS WEEK

BY JOHN GLOVER

This week, we celebrate the start of a new era for our friends over at Limelight Magazine – woohoo! We also congratulate some great musicians for their effort in the arts industry.

…and GO!

THE SAGA CONTINUES

Limelight Magazine has announced some great news – it’s back in business and has found two brand new owners! Amid fears of liquidation due to financial instability, Robert Veel and Bruce Wilson have now stepped up as co-directors of the newly founded company, Limelight Arts Media Pty Ltd. Having a wealth of business experience and an active involvement in the arts, Robert and Bruce will be sure to lead Limelight into an exciting future. Good luck, guys!

WASO CHAIRMAN ANNOUNCED

Richard Goyder AO has been elected as the new chairman of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra. Following on from his successor Janet Holmes, who has held the position for 20 years, Goyder has expressed his deep appreciation for WASO’s commitment in the national arts scene and we look forward to seeing him step up to the podium in this new role.

YOUNG MUSICIANS ARE YOUNG ACHIEVERS

The finalists for the national Coffe Club Arts and Fashion Awards (a section of the national Young Achievers Awards) have come out with some familiar faces. Conductors Leonard Weiss and Alexander Rodrigues are in the finals line-up for the awards in New South Wales & ACT and Tasmania, respectively. And on top of that, the two had recently met up when they took part in the Australian Conducting Academy 2018 Summer School! In addition, our very own editor Stephanie Eslake has also been named a finalist for the Tasmanian award. Well done to all the young achievers who are dedicated to music and the arts!

Leonard Weiss is a finalist in the NSW & ACT awards!

LUMINESCENCE ON TOUR

The Luminescence Children’s Choir is prepping up for its first ever national tour! Choristers will be heading to Melbourne, and Hobart in July to partake in the Festival of Voices. They’re set to collaborate with some of Australia’s finest vocal ensembles. For those who are keen, there are still places for new choristers to jump onboard this tour. The deadline for Term 2 applications is March 18.

MASTERCLASS EXTRAVAGANZA!

Young Tasmanian musicians may be excited to hear that the TSO will be holding its largest ever masterclass event in recent history. Selected students from the North and Northwest of Tasmania will have the opportunity to learn from accomplished musicians in the orchestra on April 14. You better get in quick, though – applications for this event close in just a week’s time!
