HEADLINES FROM THE INDUSTRY THIS WEEK

BY JOHN GLOVER

This week comes with lots of call-outs for music lovers of all ages, and a few announcements about some concerts coming up across the country.

…and GO!

COME ONE, COME ALL!

Melbourne classical music station 3MBS has announced an epic weekend ahead for music lovers with its bi-annual Music and Book Fair! Head to Abbotsford Convent on April 28 and 29 to check out the thousands of books, vinyls, CDs and sheet music all on sale. If you’ve been looking for that special copy of Pachelbel’s Canon in D, you’ll no doubt be spoilt for choice here.

WE WISH YOU THE BEST, ANNE

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra is changing its concert plans after facing the sad news that mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter’s husband has passed away. As such, Australian tenor Stuart Skelton will perform in her place at concerts on March 22-24. In tribute to Anne, Stuart will present a program of Lieder songs in the first half of these concerts, alongside maestro Donald Runnicles. We wish you all the best during this time, Anne.

CALLING ALL POOCHES!

Opera Australia has just put out a call for aspiring pooches to perform in the production of La Bohème in Sydney Harbour! If you have a well-trained, small- to medium-size dog who loves being in the spotlight, you can register the pup to perform in one of 26 shows – and get two complimentary tickets while you’re at it. It’ll be a walkie you and your best friend will never forget, that’s for sure!

SCHOLARSHIPS APLENTY

The Fahan School in Tasmania is calling for all musicians to apply for its music scholarships for 2019 entry. Scholarships are open to all students entering into Years 5, 7 and 10-12 where applicants will need to perform two contrasting pieces of their own choice. Though the closing date for applications had closed, we have been informed that this date has been extended, so make sure to contact the school if you’re interested. String and wind players are strongly encouraged to apply!

UP FOR A TRIP TO CAIRNS?

The Cairns Winter Music School is calling all musicians to participate in its music program in July. Join in a four-day adult orchestral workshop with music lovers all across the country, under the tutelage of Mark Eager, conductor of the Welsh Sinfonia. Check out this wonderful opportunity (and book a nice holiday to Cairns in the meantime!).
