Arts news of the week (in 60 seconds)

HEADLINES FROM THE INDUSTRY THIS WEEK

BY JOHN GLOVER

This week, we examine the many structural changes in some of our celebrated arts organisations around the country. We also celebrate some wonderful achievements by Australian artists.

…and GO!

MSO CHIEF CONDUCTOR BIDS US FAREWELL

The Melbourne Symphony Orchestra will sadly say goodbye to its Chief Conductor Sir Andrew Davis at the conclusion of his tenure in December 2019. His relationship with the orchestra will have spanned 10 years at his departure, a decade which has brought great joy to musicians and audiences in Melbourne and around the world. Though it is unfortunate news, Andrew will still maintain a strong relationship with the MSO as he will become Conductor Laureate of the orchestra.

COMPOSER-IN-RESIDENCE

Rafael Karlen has been announced as the new Peggy Glanville-Hicks Composer-in-Residence for 2018! Renowned for his diverse compositional style, Rafael will now have the privilege to move into the three-bedroom estate residence in Sydney’s Paddington area for 12 months to focus on his compositional output. With plans for projects that cross jazz, classical, and traditional music from Tibet, we are looking forward to hearing all the works this composer has for us!

OPERA AUSTRALIA WINS!

Some amazing artists were celebrated at the 35th Green Room Awards on Tuesday night, however it was the team at Opera Australia that really shone. The organisation won all nine awards in the Opera category, and an additional five more in the Music Theatre category; a remarkable achievement! Rory Jeffes, the CEO of Opera Australia, has praised the work of everyone in the company and remarking on the “outstanding result” achieved from the awards.

WELCOME, TOBY CHADD!

ABC Classic FM and ABC Jazz are pleased to welcome Toby Chadd as their new Content Manager. Toby has worked extensively with the ABC in a variety of roles, and will be successor to Matthew Dewey. Its all happening over at the ABC!

SSO LOOKING AFTER YOUNG MUSICIANS

The Sydney Symphony Orchestra will visit young musicians from NSW’s Central Coast this week in its annual music camp Playerlink! This program will include 64 young students in a three-day program full of mentoring by the SSO before culminating in a community concert on April 15 in the Central Coast Conservatorium. SSO Director of Learning and Engagement Linda Lorenza has described her excitement with the program to help “nurture the talents of the next generation and encourage them to pursue their passions”.
