The Melbourne Youth Orchestra will present an enormous series of concerts this month – the first featuring an explosive program of Berlioz, Wagner, and Tchaikovsky (we can’t wait). Guest conductor Malcolm Yuen will lead the young musicians through this concert Romans and Romance at the Meat Market, 5 Blackwood St, from 2.30pm November 13.

After this, you can catch the talented young musos again at the Ensemble Program Spring Concerts. See the Alexandra Cameron Strings, Melbourne Youth Chamber Strings, John Antill Youth Band, Melbourne Youth Junior Strings, Percy Grainger Youth Orchestra, Melbourne Youth Strings, and Melbourne Youth Wind Symphony through the day of November 20 at Deakin Edge, Federation Square.

Sydney folk, it’s time for The Finale. See the Sydney Youth Orchestras present their epic end-of-year concert at The Concourse in Chatswood, 3pm November 6. Sydney Philharmonic (conducted by Brian Buggy OAM), and The Sydney Youth Orchestra (conducted by Matthew Coorey) will present Dvorak’s Carnival Overture and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D minor, Op. 47.

This muso: Matt Withers. The winning works of the 2016 Matt Withers Australian Music Composition Competition, and a new commission written by composition senior lecturer Dr Robert Davidson (University of Queensland), will be presented at the Margaret Whitlam Pavilion, National Arboretum, Canberra at 1.30pm November 13. You can also enjoy Spanish and Latin American classical guitar favourites.

The Melbourne Philharmonia Project will perform its next concert FATE at 7.30 December 2, Hawthorn Arts Centre. It’s the last gig of the year for the group – so get ready for a big program. Works include Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite, Sibelius’ Violin Concerto performed by soloist Charlie Westholff, and Strauss’ Four Songs Opus No. 27 performed by soloist Cleo Lee-McGowan.

See the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs’ VOX conducted by Elizabeth Scott in this performance with Synergy Percussion. The program includes Luke Byrne’s Desert Sea, Iannis Xenakis’ Idmen A, Ohko, Eric Whitacre’s Sleep, Melody Eötvös’ A Strange Manuscript found in a Copper Cylinder (world premiere), and Dan Forrest’s Three Nocturnes. VOX is made of talented singers aged 18-30. Events at 8pm November 11, Independent Theatre, North Sydney; and 3pm November 13, Riverside Theatre, Parramatta.

The Song Company will tour a program of Arvo Part, Antony Pitts, John Tavener, and more as part of its Orthodox Christmas concert series. Expect to be immersed in Georgian, Greek, and other stunning styles of singing. Venues from Blackheath to Wollongong and beyond between November 3-16. Find out when they’ll be near you.

Continuing the Christmas theme, the Australian Bach Society will present the composer’s Christmas Oratorio BWV 248 with the Melbourne Chamber Choir, Orchestra, and solo voices conducted by Dr David Kram. Featuring talented soloists Robert Macfarlane (tenor), Lisa-Anne Robinson (soprano), Selena Pettifer (alto), and Oliver Mann (bass). 5pm December 10, St Paul’s Cathedral, cnr Swanston and Flinders Streets.

The Tasmanian Youth Orchestra is set to present its second big concert of the year in its Spring Concert, showcasing the talents of all of its five ensembles! And we’re teaming up with the TYO to announce the launch of something seriously special – stay tuned. TYO1, TYO2, TYO Winds, Academy Strings, and Endeavour Strings will perform. Concert takes place at 2pm October 30 in the Farrall Centre, The Friends’ School. Tickets at the door.

Omega Ensemble: Three Parts Mozart
See this leading chamber group present works by Haydn and Mozart on November 3 at the City Recital Hall, Angel Place. Under the direction of clarinettist and conductor Paul Meyer. Artistic director David Rowden says: “This will certainly be a treat for fellow lovers of the clarinet”.

The Consort of Melbourne: Voices O’er the Waves
The second concert in the Consort of Melbourne’s Elements series features a water-themed program of music by Tormis, Barber, Nørgård, Martin, Walker, Monteverdi, Victoria, and more. Event on November 9 at the Melbourne Recital Centre. 

Polyphonic Voices: Requiem
Two double passes are up for grabs here – one for the November 12 gig in Melbourne, and November 13 gig in Bendigo. You’ll be seated in the Reserved section, just a few rows from the action. The singers are collaborating with the Adelaide Chamber Singers in these gala events featuring Faure’s Requiem.
