Derwent Valley Concert Band: from Stage and Screen

In Hobart

BY LYALL MCDERMOTT

“The thundering of cannons, the clattering of swords and the swirling and flourishing of Erich Korngold’s incomparable music…..”. What a way to be able (finally) to celebrate the end of the election campaign!

And The Sea Hawk is just the first piece on the Derwent Valley Concert Band’s program of music from some of the great stage shows and film musicals that they will present on July 2 at the Stanley Burbury Theatre.

Your brain cells will rejuvenate when you listen to Joe Hisaishi’s amazing score to the anime movie Spirited Away. Relax and recuperate by singing along (perhaps not too loudly) with those wonderful songs from South Pacific and The Wizard of Oz. Shake off your body’s torpor by dancing (on the inside please) to Leonard Bernstein’s stunning music from West Side Story and be completely amazed by the brilliant pianistic skills of Thomas Misson when he performs Richard Addinsell’s timeless classic Warsaw Concerto.

After the interval, another very talented pianist, Jennifer Yu, will join Mr Misson to perform two short pieces from Tim Burton’s The Corpse Bride. Jennifer, with the DVCB Wind Quintet, will also present the delightful Carl Davis theme music to the BBC 1995 television series Pride and Prejudice.

Other music on the program will come from the video game Halo; The Man From Snowy River, The Nightmare before Christmas, and Hymn to the Fallen from Saving Private Ryan.

The concert commences at 7.30pm. Refreshments will be available and admission is by donation.
