City Recital Hall has announced the Sydney debut of the “queen of the toy piano” (The New York Times) Margaret Leng Tan as the headline act of their acclaimed festival of new music Extended Play.

Music, theatre, comedy and performance will all merge in Margaret Leng Tan’s dynamic performance where Australians audiences will have their first chance to hear George Crumb’s new work Metamorphoses, written especially for her. This “diva of avant-garde pianism” (The New Yorker) will combine prepared piano, toy piano and Steinway Grand Piano in an unmissable show.

CEO Elaine Chia says “Margaret Leng Tan is the perfect follow-on to the enormous success of the inaugural event last year. Having experienced Margaret perform earlier this year, I’m so thrilled that Sydney finally gets to see and meet this foremost interpreter of the avant-garde.”

Extended Play in 2018 was hailed as “the best new classical music initiative Sydney has seen in years” (The Australian), and an “exhilarating festival, wonderfully supportive of local artists and ensembles, emerging talent and an audience eager to engage.” (Real Time). City Recital Hall and Lyle Chan will join forces again to create a spectacular program jam-packed with 12 hours of eclectic, contemporary, challenging and dynamic new music across the entire four floors of the venue.

Extended Play co-producer Lyle Chan says: “We are thrilled that the best new music acts from Perth, Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne are joining their Sydney colleagues for this non-stop 12 hours of fun and daring adventure.”

The stellar line-up of soloists, duos and ensembles includes artists from across Australia and internationally: Synergy, Sonya Lifschitz and Christine Johnston, Decibel, Halcyon, Australian Voices and Zephyr Quartet, who will delve into an epic piano piece that may be one of the most physically demanding works seen on our stage. This is to name but a few – there are 20 performances in 12 hours!

See Extended Play presented by City Recital Hall and co-produced with Lyle Chan and Vexations840 on August 31. Full details and program on the City Recital Hall website.
