LIVE AT ELDER HALL

CONTENT COURTESY ADELAIDE PHILHARMONIA CHORUS

Two composers, two masses 17 years apart: one a celebratory fanfare, the other devotionally lyrical.

The Adelaide Philharmonia Chorus will perform Haydn’s Nelson Mass and Schubert’s Mass in G.

Haydn’s Nelson Mass – or Missa in Angustiis – is a ‘mass for troubled times’, composed when Haydn’s world was in turmoil as Napoleon’s armies crossed The Alps and threatened Vienna. It is an extraordinary work of tension and drama, reflecting the fear and uncertainty of the time. Darkly set in D minor, it opens with dramatic fanfares that give way to contemplative, joyful movements as the mood gradually changes to one of optimism, ending in hope and a jubilant D major finale.

In contrast, Schubert’s serene and uplifting Mass in G is the gentlest of masses. Graceful devotion infuses its brilliant rhythms, long melodic spans and expressive harmonies.

Under the baton of Aldis Sils, APC will be joined by soloists Bethany Hill (Soprano), Charlie Kelso (Alto), Jiacheng Ding (Tenor) and Alex Roose (Bass), and accompanied by pianist Nerissa Pearce, three trumpets and timpani.
