The Choir of St James' will sing Messiah

The Choir of St James’ and BachBand@St James’ return to City Recital Hall to perform one of the greatest choral pieces in the Western classical music repertoire: Handel’s Messiah.

Handel’s best-loved oratorio was first performed in Dublin at Eastertide in 1742 by a group of just 16 singers. This March, the audience at City Recital Hall will experience a performance, on the same scale as the Messiah’s premiere, by The Choir of St James’ and BachBand@St James’. Directed by Warren Trevelyan-Jones, the Choir and Band will be joined by soloists Amy Moore, Sally-Anne Russell, Richard Butler and Christopher Richardson, and will take you on the journey of Christ from prophecy and birth, to death and resurrection.

“This Messiah performance will provide a true balance between voices and instruments, affecting articulation, ornamentation and phrasing, resulting in a work that is closer to Handel’s original approach” – Warren Trevelyan-Jones

The Choir of St James’, directed by Warren Trevelyan-Jones, enjoys a reputation of being one the finest choirs in Australia. The Choir enjoys regular collaborations with groups such as The Tallis Scholars, The King’s Singers, The Gabrieli Consort, Opera Australia, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Haydn Ensemble, and soloists Yvonne Kenny, Greta Bradman and Teddy Tahu Rhodes. The Choir of St James’ also is committed to supporting new Australian works, including compositions written by past and present members of the choir.

The Choir has toured to Europe and South East Asia, and made its debut at City Recital Hall in April this year, performing J.S. Bach’s St John Passion with the Baroque ensemble, BachBand@St James’. In late April, the choir will return to Gallipoli to sing at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service as guests of the Department of Veteran Affairs.

BachBand@StJames’ is one of Sydney’s newest Baroque ensembles, whose membership comprises the most sought-after Baroque instrumentalists in the city. It performs regularly with The Choir of St James’ in concerts and services, such as the Cantata Series, where Cantatas by J.S. Bach are performed liturgically in the Lutheran style.
