Melbourne Digital Concert Hall is teaming up with Camerata, Queensland’s Chamber Orchestra, for a spontaneous live streamed broadcast from the Queensland Performing Arts Centre at 7pm AEST June 5.
Camerata Re-Mastered will feature Beethoven’s Grand Fugue, Turina’s sensual Bullfighter’s Prayer, Steve Reich’s Duet, and the world premiere of Beyond the Front Door by Queensland composer John Rotar.
The ensemble will also showcase the 2021 composition Little Corellas by Camerata’s founding leader Cameron Patrick, as well as Betty Beath’s Woman’s Song, plus Samuel Barber’s beautiful Adagio for Strings.
Featuring Camerata’s Ensemble-in-Residence, the Orava Quartet, the concert will close with Edward Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro for String Quartet and String Orchestra.
“We’re thrilled to connect Camerata with audiences around Australia, and particularly those who are in lockdown in Melbourne,” MDCH co-director Chris Howlett. says.
“Camerata is one of Australia’s leading chamber ensembles. When we broadcast their performance in 2020, they received rave reviews everywhere from Melbourne and Broome to Dingo Bay. We can’t wait to showcase their artistry this weekend.”
Camerata artistic director Brendan Joyce adds: “If we’ve all learned nothing else from COVID-19, it is how important music is to our lives, be that as listeners or performers.”
“We feel for our friends, colleagues and family in Melbourne, going through a fourth lockdown and in such close proximity. The lockdown has affected our programming too, but we hope the silver lining here is the opportunity for us to play and for you to hear some fascinating and also sublime music from the magnificent QPAC Concert Hall through the inspired idea that is Melbourne Digital Concert Hall.”
For MDCH, this concert marks the beginning of an impromptu national showcase designed to keep audiences everywhere connected through top-quality live performance, even in lockdown. A range of opportunities to support Melbourne artists will also be announced in the coming week.
