More about Garden Quartet:
Garden Quartet was formed by Iranian musician Gelareh Pour in 2016. After launching her first two albums, Tanin-e Melbourne featuring Brian O’Dwyer, Adam Simmons and Andrew Polydorou; and, Gelareh Pour and Mick Trembath Live at B1 Gallery in Ballarat, Gelareh has taken her exploration of Iranian-Australian music to a new level.
Gelareh Pour’s haunting vocals convey a depth of emotion. Singing completely in Farsi, her ability to convey her message and tell her story through simply the sound of her voice is testament to the beauty of her craft.
Combining traditional Persian instruments with modern western music, Garden blends cultures seamlessly, to create a fresh and inviting sound. Bringing the past into the present, reflecting on the personal struggles of migration, love, loss, and family, Garden truly is a one-off enigma serving to challenge what it means to be a cross-cultural entity, and uniting people of different class, faith, and communities along the way.
Featuring: Gelareh Pour on Kamancheh (Persian Spiked Fiddle) and voice, accompanied by Mike Gallichio on electric guitar, Arman Habibi on santur (Persian hammered dulcimer) and voice, and Brian O’Dwyer on drum kit.
This will be Garden Quartet’s first live performance after recording their debut album which will be released later in 2019.
More about SARAY Iluminado:
After many successful concerts in 2018, including a tour of Tasmania with shows at the Hobart Synagogue, MONA Museum, The Cygnet Folk Festival, and local Melbourne performances at fortyfivedownstairs, the Piers Festival and two concerts at the Melbourne Recital Centre, SARAY Iluminado joins forces with the Garden Quartet to commence their 2019 performance season.
Drawing on music and mythology, members of SARAY Iluminado take us on a pilgrimage from the Iberian to the Balkan Peninsula through Bosnian Sevdah and Sephardic Jewish songs, and with tales of love, grief, hope and despair.
This ensemble specializes in intimate and immersive performances and is known for its distinctive concert aesthetic. The core of this aesthetic is the lead singer Nela Trifkovic’s intimate knowledge of Balkan and Sephardic music and cultural traditions, with each ensemble member enriching with their own intricate musicianship and stage craft.
Together with Nela, SARAY Iluminado includes four more of Melbourne’s much loved and eclectic multi-instrumentalists: Ernie Gruner (Bohemian Nights, KLEZMERITIS), Irine Vela (the haBiBis),
Dan Witton (Bush Gothic), and Kelly Dowall (Muziz).
