The musical partnership between Simone Young and ANAM’s musicians has provided Melbourne with some enduring musical memories: a Brahms series of searching intensity and last year’s Turangalîla-Symphonie being just two highlights of this collaboration. Strauss’ sorrow-laden Metamorphosen, a threnody for the Germany of 1944 that lay in ruins about him, teeters precariously on the edge of this world and another: following its final bars, we are inevitably left staring into an immense silence. The life-affirming answer is the elegiac lyricism of Brahms’ Third Symphony.
