You may have heard some Balinese gamelan, but have you ever heard it combined with piano, trumpet and electronics?
On 29 May, Bianca Gannon and Elliott Hughes present That Which Resonates, That Which Decays: an evening of new music at fortyfivedownstairs, exploring the spaces between the ancient and the modern, tradition and invention, and composition and improvisation.
Following ensemble residencies with the Australian Art Orchestra and Lebowski’s DevRes program, as well as performances at MONA, Tilde New Music Festival, Arts Centre Melbourne, and Meat Market, the duo has expertly refined its approach to such a unique combination of instruments, conjuring a stunning sonic world, melding traditional Balinese timbres with classical European textures.
The Bianca Gannon/Elliott Hughes Duo will present a range of new works, as well as in trio and quartet formats with guests double bassist Josh Holt and gamelan musician Sophie Covey-Crump. They will also be joined by vocalist Jenny Barnes who will perform Gannon’s I SAID NO! – a bold, personal and timely statement piece. The second set will see live electronics added to the mix, with the traditionally acoustic instruments re-imagined in the present day through looping and effects.
See the show at 7pm May 29, fortyfivedownstairs (45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne).
