Facebook banned Australian arts media. Here’s what you can do to keep up

we're not abandoning our community

FROM THE CUTCOMMON TEAM

Here at CutCommon, we woke to the devastating news on Thursday morning that our publication — as with all Australian media outlets and community news — has been banned from Facebook. Banned from sharing stories that celebrate our arts practitioners, banned from engaging in a community that exists only to support the local music industry.

Since 2014, we have volunteered our time to support this community. Now, we need your support in return. We ask you to stay with us — to keep reading the news about your industry. And we’ll show you how to do it.

It’s not over. Our stories are still here.

We will continue to publish, right here, where we’ve always been for you. The only change? The way you choose to visit us.

It’s not all bad (we hope). Our own statistics hint that Australian arts media organisations are going to pull through. Facebook accounts for less than 10% of our website visits. So this means that if you’re an artist, and we share your story, the world will still hear your voice.

We won’t be silenced, and you won’t either.

What we woke up to on Thursday. But we’re not leaving you.

So how can you keep up to date with your industry news?

Well, it’s pretty simple, really. Here are a few things you can do.

1. Want updates delivered to you? Sign up to our new mailing list.

We’ve started a new Mailchimp list in light of this news, so we can keep you updated with our arts community stories.

We’re working on things behind the scenes, but we plan to send you regular updates or round-ups sharing our news, so you don’t miss out on what’s going on in the Australian arts industry.

2. Follow us on your favourite platforms.

Okay, so we’re not on Facebook anymore. But we are on Instagram (@cutcommonmag), Twitter (@cut_common), and LinkedIn. So we’ll still be seeing you pretty regularly.

3. On an iPhone? Add our icon to your homepage.

If you’re using an iPhone, you can visit our website in your browser. Hit the share icon, and scroll until you find the option to add to your home page. Now, you can access us just as easily as if we were an app!

4. On a desktop? Add us to your shortcuts.

If you’re using Chrome, you can simply visit Google, hit the ‘add shortcut’ icon, which looks like a plus sign, then paste in our URL. It’ll appear below your search bar. There you go!

We’ll be back with more tips to help you access our website a little differently. But above all, thank you for reading our stories.

If you want to show further support, you can pay what you like for our news. We’re all volunteering our time, and your contribution will help us maintain Australian independent arts media in this seriously — seriously — unstable environment. No amount too much or little.
