The sounds of ancient Turkey meet Western classical music when leading oboe specialist Ben Opie, multi-instrumentalist Matthew Horsley, and bağlama virtuoso Iskender Ozan Toprak join forces for an intimate performance at Kew Court House.

Their diverse repertoire will range from solo works through to diverse ensemble presentations, from J.S. Bach to original works by Iskender Ozan Toprak, Turkish folk music, Vivaldi, and a world premiere performance of Caerwen Martin’s new work for oboe and bağlama, Grandmother.

Ben Opie is an oboist whose talents extend across the entire repertoire for oboe. His passion for contemporary music has led him to work with some of the finest new music ensembles across the world. He has had extensive training in Historically Informed Performance practice, studying with leaders in the field such as Geoffrey Lancaster and Genevieve Lacey. Ben has commissioned many new works for oboe, and gives national and international premieres on a regular basis.

Iskender Ozan Toprak was born in Aydin, Turkey. The musician and composer has led a diverse and exciting career, performing with theatre groups, rock bands, orchestras, and 2003 Eurovision winner Sertab Erener. Iskender founded an ensemble of 25 musicians and performed with this orchestra his own compositions under the title Orient meets Occident.

Matthew Horsley is a multi-instrumentalist and composer. Hailing from Brisbane, he received a Bachelor of Music at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music with Dr Vanessa Tomlinson. In 2009, he relocated to Melbourne and has completed a Master of Music Performance (by Research) at the Victorian College of the Arts as the recipient of a Melbourne Research Scholarship. His teachers have included Vanessa Tomlinson, Peter Neville, Alex Pertout, Kevin March and Graeme Leak.
