Lydia McClelland reviews Music for a While
Invenio Singers
Melbourne Recital Centre, 31 January


In a merging of musical eras, the Invenio Singers’ intimate Melbourne Recital Centre performance offered an ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere. It would have been easy to forget I was in the midst of Melbourne city.

Led by founder Gian Slater, the singers’ a cappella arrangements of pieces by Handel, Purcell, Hugo Wolf, and Vaughan Williams brought fluid cohesion between works. Simple choreographed movements allowed different listening experiences: in the breathtaking introduction to Handel’s O Sleep, performers roamed the space singing single notes or short slides, with swells of sound blooming as they walked past.

I left calm and with a clear mind. Straight after the performance, in my (Literally) Live Review, I reflected on the experience:
