New Palm Court Orchestra: Quartet at Bennetts Lane

Artistic director Gemma Turvey presents NPCO

Celebrate the beginning of Spring with New Palm Court Orchestra artistic director and pianist/composer Gemma Turvey; and fellow NPCO members Craig Beard (vibraphone & percussion), Jeremy Blackman (violin) and Tom Lee (acoustic bass) as they perform an intimate evening of evocative original compositions and arrangements at the iconic Bennetts Lane Jazz Club on 16 September, proudly presented by the Melbourne Jazz Co-Operative.

In the spirit of Spring, AD Gemma Turvey has curated an evening of musical dances, including works by vibraphonist Craig Beard, movements from her own St Elphen Suite, and arrangements of Dave Grusin’s Mountain Dance, Egberto Gismonti’s Don Quixote, a bluegrass medley and a familiar bolero.

“We’ve all endured a long cold winter. When Martin Jackson invited us to perform in September for the Melbourne Jazz Co-Op Program, I wanted to use the evening to celebrate spring and give the audience something to dance about,” says Gemma.

The NPCO is about inspiring audiences to the art of improvisation within instrumental music, and breaking down the barriers of music genres. The NPCO is a core of nine players comprising some of Melbourne’s brightest classical, jazz and improvising musicians. Their performances feature melodic improvisation in almost every work. This performance at Bennetts Lane Jazz Club features a quartet reduction of the ensemble, for the Melbourne Jazz Co-Op’s program.
