‘I can’t explain myself, I’m afraid, sir,’ said Alice. ‘Because I’m not myself, you see.’

In second self, Rubiks Collective takes a journey to the other side of the looking glass, where the boundaries between the public and private, the sane and the mad, the truth and the mask melt away. Who are you, and who do you want to be?

A study of how we understand ourselves and others, second self takes us from the golden age of Hollywood to notorious psychological experiments as identities multiply, transform, evolve, seduce and deceive. Special guest mezzo-soprano Lotte Betts-Dean joins Rubiks for this deliriously alluring program, featuring the Australian premieres of works by Jacob TV, David Bird, Anna Clyne and Andy Akiho.

Rubiks is Melbourne’s most dynamic contemporary art music ensemble, bringing together some of Australia’s most exciting and versatile young performers. Since debuting in 2014, the ensemble has been commended for their “incredibly personal, strangely spiritual and ultimately deeply touching” performances (Limelight Magazine). With a particular interest in storytelling and crossart collaboration, Rubiks has quickly established a reputation for excellence, delighting audiences with their unique programming and dazzling virtuosity. You can hear this in action right here:

Special guests for second self…

Australian mezzo soprano Lotte Betts-Dean has just completed a Masters at the Royal Academy of Music studying under Catherine Benson and Audrey Hyland. Her performance experience encompasses opera, oratorio, contemporary music, art song recital/chamber music, early music and non-classical collaborations. Prior to relocating to London, she received her BMus in 2012 from the Conservatorium of Music at Melbourne University, completed a Fellowship at the Australian National Academy of Music in 2014, and sang several principal roles in predominantly contemporary operas with state company Victorian Opera. She has studied in Milan (Accademia Teatro alla Scala), privately in New York, and at the 2016 Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt with Donatienne Michel-Dansac and the Vocalsolisten Stuttgart. Concert highlights with RAM have included various chamber music events, performances at the Aldeburgh Festival, Oxford Lieder Festival and a solo recital at Bristol’s Colston Hall, as well as a masterclass with Sir Thomas Allen. Other recent highlights include performances at Wigmore Hall, Norfolk Festival, Handel House Museum, Australia House, St James’ Palace and Dartington Festival. She is also a member of new music ensemble x.y.

Australian contemporary violinist, string educator, and random mandolinist Zachary Johnston is a member of several new music ensembles including Arcko Symphonic Project, 3 Shades Black, 6º ensemble, and Bolt Ensemble.

As part of long-term research Zac is investigating into how curiosity and New Music is integrated into pedagogy, particularly in violin studies. He has taken this philosophy into his education work with various ensembles including conducting State Music Camp, MSO Pizzicato Effect, and a variety of improvisation and New Music workshops for school ensembles. Complementing this, Zac was recently offered a scholarship to work with Walter Thompson with an aim to incorporate the live compositional technique of ‘Soundpainting’ into education and performances in Australia.

Zac has performed with Argonaut for the Bendigo International Festival of Exploratory Music (BIFEM) since 2013, completed a Masters of Music Performance Teaching in 2013, participated in the 2014 and 2016 Internationales Musikinstitut Darmstadt, and performed as part of the 2015 Bang on a Can Summer Festival at MASS MoCA, Massachusetts.
