CutCommon is “one of the most dynamic sites” in Australian arts criticism, writes Caroline Baum in an edgy new feature for weekend Sydney Morning Herald publication Spectrum.
Caroline, founding editor of Good Reading and veteran journalist and broadcaster, writes about the changing nature of arts coverage.
She interviews CutCommon founding editor Stephanie Eslake, who states: “I’m not going to be intimidated by the challenging state of arts media in Australia. The fact that it’s an extremely difficult time is all the more reason to persist in this field”.
Stephanie speaks candidly about going to print, reader engagement, and making tough decisions in her priorities as editor.
She discusses the challenges of continuing to publish music reviews when interviews are more popular among reader culture. (This is an issue addressed through the introduction of CutCommon’s (Literally) Live Reviews, which aim to reinvigorate Australian arts criticism through a new medium.)
You can read the full story in the Sydney Morning Herald’s digital publication.
The story is titled: ‘Seen the show? Be a critic. The rise of the online arts reviewer’, and features a range of industry voices including Alison Croggon, Suzy Wrong, and more.
