The Grand Tour: A Baroque Road Trip

Music@St James

Australian Baroque Brass returns to St James’ to present a program of Baroque masterpieces with The Choir of St James’ and Tobias Cole (Countertenor).

Journeys through Europe were an educational rite of passage which flourished through the 17th, 18th and early 19th centuries. Searching for art, culture and education through the exposure of classical antiquity and the renaissance, they became extremely fashionable with the polite English upper classes.

Tracing our journey through music of the ages and the various cities visited, this is a concert steeped in the wonderment of the European Baroque, and will feature Tobias Cole (Countertenor) and John Foster (Trumpet) performing works by Purcell, Handel, Vivaldi and others.

The Choir of St James’, directed by Warren Trevelyan-Jones, enjoys a reputation of being one the finest choirs in Australia. The choir has collaborated with groups such as The Tallis Scholars, The King’s Singers, The Gabrieli Consort, Opera Australia, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, The Australian Haydn Ensemble, and soloists Yvonne Kenny, Greta Bradman and Teddy Tahu Rhodes.

The Choir of St James’ is also committed to supporting new Australian works, including compositions written by past and present members of the choir.

The choir has toured to Europe and South East Asia, and made its debut at City Recital Hall in April performing J.S. Bach’s St John Passion with the Baroque ensemble, BachBand@St James. In late April, the choir travelled to Gallipoli to sing at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service as guests of the Department of Veteran Affairs.

Australian Baroque Brass is renowned as one of Australia’s finest early music ensembles, pioneering the use of period brass instruments in Australia. ABB has performed at many festivals and music institutions throughout Australia, the UK and the USA, and has collaborated with well-known artists and ensembles such as Paul McCreesh, Crispian Steele-Perkins, Sara Macliver, The Song Company, and Baroque Brass of London, and has recorded extensively for radio and CD.

Tobias Cole, Artistic Director of Handel In The Theatre, is one of Australia’s most successful counter-tenors, having performed with opera companies, orchestras and choral societies throughout Australia, the UK and USA. He has also been Artistic Director of Canberra Choral Society and Distinguished Artist in Residence at the Australian National University.

John Foster (director of Australian Baroque Brass) is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading exponents of performance on historical trumpets and cornetto. He has appeared as soloist at festivals and concert series worldwide, and with many leading orchestras and ensembles, and has made numerous solo recordings. John has given many masterclasses at renowned institutions including the Juilliard School, Sydney Conservatorium, and the Royal Northern College of Music. He is the Director of the Australasian Trumpet Academy.
