This October, Opera Queensland is staging a bold new production of Don Giovanni directed by Lindy Hume at the Playhouse, QPAC. At a time when sexual misconduct is at the forefront of our collective consciousness, Hume’s sobering take on Mozart’s masterpiece will strike a brutally relevant chord.
To create the defining scene in this poignant production, Opera Queensland is seeking approximately 200 women to participate in the finale – a highly dramatic scene in which Don Giovanni is dragged to his end by the hundreds of victims he has preyed upon. The seven-minute scene will require participants to appear naked, semi-naked or clothed in underwear as ‘avenging furies’.
Participants in this new production will play a horde of ‘avenging furies’ – some of the thousands of women in Giovanni’s catalogue of conquests, now taking revenge for the suffering his lifetime of debauchery has caused. In the final scene, Giovanni is dragged down to hell by the furies, and I want this scene to be as spectacular and as resonant for contemporary audiences as possible.
