What’s new at CutCommon in 2017?

We're going to print!

From the editors, Stephanie Eslake and Lucy Rash

Happy New Year from CutCommon!

Welcome to 2017! Thanks to the support and enthusiasm of our readers, we just finished a huge year which saw the launch of many new projects including our inaugural CutCommon Young Writer of the Year Competition, our Manuscript Design Competition to raise funds for the Tasmanian Youth Orchestra, and our friends (with benefits) subscription service to bring you discounts and freebies across the Australian arts scene. In 2016 we were also selected for preservation by the National Library of Australia’s Pandora archive.

We’ve enjoy connecting with you through our blogs, articles, and reviews to showcase what you are doing in your musical life and career. Now that 2017 has ticked over, we are looking forward to bringing you a range of exciting new projects this year, and continuing to support what you have happening across the Australian classical and new music scene, too!

So, what’s in store?

  • We’re going to print!

Since 2014, we’ve grown into Australia’s leading online publication and hub for the young classical musician. So now, we’ve decided it’s time to join you in the physical world and head to print!

“CutCommon is now one of the most trusted sources of cutting-edge music journalism in Australia,” CutCommon deputy editor Lucy Rash says.

“We aim for content that is informative, exciting, and fun to read, so naturally, we want to find new ways of allowing you to incorporate this into your day.

“We want to give you the opportunity to pick up a long-form copy of CutCommon as you order your morning coffee, to enjoy a slow and tangible start to your busy day. And how about a bit less screen time on the train home from work, while still catching up with the latest in our classic music street press news from across the country? Enjoy it on us!”

CutCommon editor Stephanie Eslake recently co-edited Tasmanian street press publication Platform, sending 5000 copies to print across the state and beyond with co-editor Melinda Antal and a team of talented young writers. Stephanie, a former News Corp arts journalist, looks forward to bringing her experiences in print to CutCommon.

We have commenced planning for our print publication and will bring you regular updates on our progress, as well as the launch date, throughout the year.

Would you like to be involved in the planning of our print publication? If you have a story you’d like to share – or write – email editor@cutcommon.com. We’d love to hear from you as we enter this exciting time!

  • EXPOSED! series launch

We are about to launch a groundbreaking new editorial series called EXPOSED! to reveal what life is really like in the orchestra. What are an orchestral musician’s challenges or routines? How does a professional cope with performance nerves? What actually goes on in the practice room? Join us this month as we kick off the series and take you behind the scenes with musicians from the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra. We look forward to sharing their insightful stories and industry advice!

  • Competition time for young writers – and composers

With the success of our inaugural CutCommon Young Writer of the Year Competition, we’re looking forward to running this program in 2017. But we’re also looking forward to hosting a brand new competition for composers, which you can look out for in the coming months. We love creating opportunities for young writers and musicians – so be sure to check back in soon when all will be revealed…

  • Opportunities to join the CutCommon team

In March, we will open expressions of interest to review live music across Australia. We want to send you along to all your favourite gigs, hear about your experience, and share it with the nation. We’ll also be welcoming a new lead writer to the team, as we bid farewell to the talented Samuel Cottell who is moving on from the role after spending a few incredible years with us. We wish Samuel good luck in his new career move! In the meantime, you’ll see a few more of his stories before we open these opportunities to join us at CutCommon. Learn about our team.

  • Doing it live

Since announcing our plans to livestream, we’ve received enormous interest from various ensembles nationwide. We will continue working behind the scenes to prepare for our breakout stream, so you can enjoy live Australian music from the comfort of your home.

“I’ve heard so many arguments over years that suggest classical music is still only a space for more mature audiences, and that young people are hard to draw in,” Lucy Rash says.

“At CutCommon, we know that’s not the case. We know there’s a supremely healthy, enthusiastic young audience right here and now for classical music. An audience that knows its benefits and understands its deep joys.

“Our new Livestreaming Service is about bringing a beautiful, evolving genre up-to-speed with the technologies of today.

Would you like us to livestream your performance or event? Email editor@cutcommon.com.

  • Keep up to date as a CutCommon subscriber

We want to hear from you! Email editor@cutcommon.com and tell us about your concert, achievement, tour, project, or anything similar that you’d love to share. We want to tell your story and support the fantastic work you do!
