The Tasmanian Youth Orchestra hosted its end of year concert this weekend, and general manager Michelle Forbes joined with CutCommon editor Stephanie Eslake to present the winner of an exclusive new competition.
CutCommon collaborated with the TYO to host an inaugural Manuscript Design Competition, in which members of the orchestra were invited to submit their original drawings or designs. The winner’s illustration will be printed on a limited edition manuscript book, and 50% of the profits will be donated to the youth orchestra.
Online pre-orders now open!
Rhiannon, who is in year 11 and plays French horn with TYO1, won with her stunning illustration. She says: “The moon has often been inspiration among the music world. I drew this piece taking inspiration from Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata and Frank Sinatra’s Fly Me To The Moon“.
Rhiannon was awarded a certificate, a CutCommon subscription, and will receive one of her limited edition manuscripts. CutCommon deputy editor Lucy Rash said of the design: “I love the simplicity of the moon, and how it speaks so much about the peace and serenity of music without usual actual words. Gorgeous”.
Along with Rhiannon, two runners-up had their pictures feature in the concert program.
Mimi, who is in year 9 and plays percussion and piano in TYO2, says “music has always been a part of my life. I grew a tree to signify life, growth, and intricate melodies”.
Alexander, a university student who plays oboe in TYO1, was inspired by the Shakespeare quote: “If music be the food of love, play on!”.
After the concert, we found TYO secretary and board member Jeremy bathing in the sunshine and taking pre-orders for our new limited edition book.
As the day comes to an end, Stephanie and Michelle pose for a photo together.
