We’re going to print!
In 2018, CutCommon will launch its first ever print magazine. And as far as we know, it’ll also be the first street press publication in Australia dedicated to sharing the stories of young and emerging classical musicians.
You’ll be able to pick up a copy of CutCommon’s physical edition for free when you visit one of 50+ top-secret venues in our roving launch, which we’ll announce soon enough. (And if you become a subscriber, we’ll also post one straight to your door.)
But leading up to our 2018 launch, we’re going to bring you our writer line-up – so join us as we celebrate and reveal the talent working hard behind the scenes to craft this bold new national magazine.
WRITERS IN PRINT!
Kieran Welch, Queensland
Kieran Welch is a violist, curator, event producer, DJ, teacher, and writer. He combines this diverse, yet complementary set of skills with a passion for presenting a wide range of musical genres to varied audiences, and a thorough training in classical viola performance.
Praised for his “fiery” interpretations of contemporary chamber repertoire by CutCommon, Kieran is a core member of new music septet Nonsemble, and as a solo artist has premiered pieces written for him by Chris Perren, Connor D’Netto and Benjamin Heim and more.
In demand across Australia and the world, he has appeared as a featured soloist in concerts for Argo, Backstage Music and Metro Arts, performed with groups such as Ensemble Offspring, the Hong Kong New Music Ensemble and Kupka’s Piano, toured China with the Sydney Dance Company, and in 2016 was selected as a fellow in the internationally regarded Bang on a Can Summer Festival. Orchestrally, he performs with Queensland’s chamber orchestra Camerata, and has held the position of principal viola in multiple engagements with String Source/Philharmonia Australia.
Kieran curates and performs in the post-genre concert series Dots+Loops. Exploring the space in between a traditional classical concert and an underground club gig, the series takes exciting, adventurous, and thought-provoking music of all kinds – and places it in relaxed, accessible urban spaces. Since 2014, the series has presented 11 critically acclaimed concert experiences, featuring Australian and world premieres of music by Nico Muhly, Caroline Shaw and Kate Moore, and collaborations with award-winning artists such as David T. Little, Brechtje, and Ashley Bathgate.
Passionate about many different styles of music, Kieran is also an award-winning DJ, and as a writer he regularly contributes to a range of publications. He completed an MPhil in Music Performance at the University of Queensland in 2017, where he studied with Patricia Pollett and Lisa Grosman.
